Patrick “Pete” Goodpaster proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a member of Charlie Company, 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, stationed at 29 Palms, California. After completing his military service, he returned home to Porter County, Indiana—a place that has been central to his life for decades.

“I’ve lived in Porter County my entire life—55 years,” Goodpaster shared. “I spent about 50 of those years in Kouts, and for the past five years, I’ve been living in Valparaiso.”

Following his time in uniform, Goodpaster felt a strong desire to stay connected to the military community. That drive led him to join the American Legion Post in his hometown of Kouts.

“About 22 years ago, I decided to get involved with the American Legion to see what I could contribute and what opportunities were there,” he said.

The American Legion, one of the nation’s largest veterans service organizations, is dedicated to supporting veterans, mentoring youth, and promoting patriotism and national security. Goodpaster quickly became an active member, serving in roles such as Honor Guard, Post Commander, and Color Guard team member.

After relocating to Valparaiso, he continued his involvement by joining Post 94, where he discovered a new passion through the American Legion Riders—a group that combines camaraderie, service, and a shared love of motorcycles. Today, Goodpaster serves as Director of the Valparaiso Post 94 American Legion Riders and remains active in other post initiatives alongside his wife, who is also a member.

For Goodpaster, the Riders offer more than just a hobby—they provide a meaningful way to give back.

“Being part of the American Legion Riders allows me to give back and pay it forward—to those who served before me and to the younger generation stepping up to serve,” he said. “It’s especially rewarding to see that sense of patriotism continue, particularly among those following in the footsteps of the Marine Corps.”

Through fundraising events, benefit rides, and volunteer efforts, the Riders and Post 94 consistently support veteran-focused causes and community initiatives. For Goodpaster, the experience is as fulfilling as it is enjoyable.

“We come together to raise funds and support other organizations that serve veterans, and we get to do it while riding motorcycles—which is one of my favorite things to do,” he said. “The camaraderie within the group is truly outstanding.”

His involvement with the Riders began just a few years ago after a close friend invited him to join a benefit ride—an experience that quickly turned into a long-term commitment.

“I was hooked right away,” Goodpaster recalled. “From that moment on, I knew I wanted to be more involved, and I hope to continue doing this for many years to come.”

Outside of his service and volunteer work, Goodpaster places a strong emphasis on family. He enjoys spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, often gathering for cookouts and family events.

“I enjoy the simple things in life. Time with family, relaxing, and making memories together,” he said.

Though his time in the Marine Corps has ended, Goodpaster continues to embody the values of service, patriotism, and community. Through his leadership in the American Legion and the Riders, he remains dedicated to supporting fellow veterans and giving back in meaningful ways.
