Veteran Spotlight: Honoring Bruce Terrell

At GoVets, we’re proud to highlight the incredible stories of our nation’s Veterans — individuals whose service, dedication, and leadership continue to inspire us every day. Today, we’re honored to share the story of Bruce Terrell, a U.S. Navy Veteran whose career exemplifies excellence, discipline, and lifelong service.

A Distinguished Naval Career

Bruce served in the United States Navy from 1971 to 1979, completing his service as an MM1(SS) Nuclear Machinist’s Mate, Submarine Qualified. His journey began with two years of intensive training at the Navy’s elite Naval Nuclear Power School and the Submarine Prototype S1W, with a short assignment aboard the USS Sperry (AS12).

Recognized for his technical expertise, Bruce was retained as an instructor at the Prototype for two years before joining the USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635). During his four years aboard the Sam Rayburn — a ballistic missile submarine equipped with 16 ICBMs and torpedoes — Bruce played a critical role in operating and maintaining the vessel’s nuclear power plant.

Reflecting on his service, Bruce shared:

“Our job was to remain submerged and undetected for months at a time as part of the nuclear deterrent against the USSR during the Cold War. Our typical patrol zone was in the North Atlantic Ocean near the Arctic Circle.”

Life aboard a submarine, Bruce recalls, was both challenging and rewarding:

“We would spend two to three months submerged, cut off from the world except for war messages. The close quarters, long hours, and demanding conditions forged a unique bond among crewmates. The food was good, the camaraderie excellent, and the pride of being a Submariner lasts a lifetime.”

During his time aboard, Bruce earned his Submarine Dolphins, and the USS Sam Rayburn received the Battle Efficiency Award twice.

Life After Service

Following his Naval career, Bruce transitioned seamlessly into the civilian sector — a testament to the skills and discipline he gained in the Navy. He spent thirty years at Diablo Canyon Power Plant, continuing to apply his nuclear expertise while also earning his Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering Technology.

Bruce reflected on how his service shaped his life beyond the military:

“The Navy provided the training and experience to allow me to work in the civilian sector doing much the same job as I did in the Navy. The discipline and perspective I gained have greatly enhanced my personal life, my role as a father and grandfather, and my faith.”

Continuing to Serve

Today, Bruce remains active in his community as a dedicated volunteer at his church and local organizations. Recently, he attended a reunion with fellow crewmembers of the USS Sam Rayburn — a reminder that the bonds formed under the ocean’s surface endure long after service ends.

GoVets thanks Bruce Terrell for his years of service, his commitment to excellence, and his continued impact both within his community and beyond. His story is a shining example of how the values learned in military service carry forward — strengthening our workplaces, families, and nation.
